Pictued are Some of the reasons why I do what I do (That's me all the way to the right)
ABOUT THE SITE
I am a former 4-H and FFA member, showman and judging team member from right here in the Sunshine State. Through my tenure as a youth, I showed goats, sheep and poultry across the state and was a member of countless judging teams, where I judged around the state and on the national level too for poultry and livestock judging, as well as participating in other CDEs and contests.
I've been on both sides - I judged as a youth and now I coach youth in my community who show livestock and compete on judging teams in the events that I once did, working hard to achieve their own goals in what I loved as a youth. Doing so, I learned that there was not one place that compiled all of the crucial information needed in one place: lists of opportunities to show and judge themselves, rules and entry forms and other information, links for more information to other websites and social media and a place to go for results like many other states have.
The information was out there - on websites and blogs, Facebook pages, online groups, email lists, word of mouth and many more, but just not in one place. And for what I did find, it was just what people sent in, no one had ever researched every fair or jackpot show to see ALL of what is out there. So, after some requests and needing a project for a freshman college course (that served as a project for several others along the way), the idea to create the site was born! I have an immense passion for youth in agriculture, a degree in agricultural communications and connections of my own (and awesome online information finding "creeping" skills, too), so it is the perfect role for me.
What is now "First Place Florida" began as the "Florida Judging Connection" back in 2015, solely for livestock judging contests. Eventually (not quite sure when), other events were added. Quickly I learned that websites aren't where the cool people hang out, it is social media, so then the posts began!
In 2017, the site became the "Florida Judging and Showing Connection," and became Florida's home for judging contest listings AND open show listings for cattle, swine, sheep, goats and poultry, and the site's presence grew. The site also maintains lists of national qualifiers over the years from 4-H and FFA.
Mid-2018 brought the rebranding of "FJASC" to "First Place Florida" (this one is for you, Dr. Telg) with an all-new site layout, 2019 brought the addition of dairy cattle shows and a few of the smaller pages, as well as the individual show page format, and here it is.
Even though I never competed in every event listed here and by no means have attended all of the shows listed here, I judged and competed around the state, and I've coached and mentored youth with their projects, too, so I've been in your shoes. Unfortunately life didn't allow me to show every weekend during the season, have a barn full of animals or cap off my career at a national-level show as a youth, but I know today, this is reality for many of the outstanding showmen out there in the state. Every one of the events on here is attended by someone, and are the hard work of many someones. Florida is stronger than ever in the stock show world, and it is important that each event covered here be detailed in a way that contributes to their success in Florida and beyond.
I originally did and still do dedicate this site to my own coach (she hasn't forgotten who she is, I hope, like she has forgotten her purse at team breakfasts and how many lives she has left after gaining another story to tell), as without her, I would have given up this kind of thing a very long time ago. I never knew going to see another old friend one day in January years ago would take me across the state and country with you and many others in my "show family" while learning tons of things and making amazing memories along the way. I hope this site helps you and many others continue your judging reigns and show careers in the Sunshine State and beyond. Love ya.
If you have any questions or comments about the site, please reach out and let me know. I want this to be the best resource that it possibly can be.
