Florida FFA and 4-H Members Compete in Junior Dairy Judging and Management Contests at All-American Dairy Expo
Mooove over livestock judging, Florida has some youth that shine in their work with dairy! As the summer concludes, the national dairy show season is beginning, and recently two teams of youth from the sunshine state traveled north to put their skills to the test while achieving some impressive results!
On September 15th-19th, the All American Dairy Show held a Youth Dairy Judging Contest for teams of FFA and 4-H members, along with the National Junior Dairy Management Contest at the show in Harrisburg, Pa. Florida had representation from 4-H and FFA in the Dairy Judging Contest and 4-H in the Dairy Management Contest.
Cady McGehee, Michael Fioretto, and Hunter Fioretto represented the Florida 4-H Youth Development Program and the Florida 4-H Dairy program in the 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. The team placed 8th in the Ayrshire division, 7th in the Brown Swiss division, 5th in the Guernsey division, 10th in the Holstein division, 10th in the Jersey division, 7th in Reasons, and 8th Overall. Individually, Michael Fioretto placed 5th in the Ayrshire division, Hunter Fioretto placed 6th in the Guernsey division, and McGehee placed 10th in the Holstein division and 9th in the Jersey division with 56 individuals and 15 teams competing.
Ainsley Peterson, Carrigan Buchanan, Camryn Warner, and Garrett Greaves represented the Florida FFA Association in the FFA Dairy Judging Contest. The team placed 1st in the Jersey division, 3rd in the Ayrshire division, 7th in the Guernsey division, 6th in the Holstein division, 6th in Reasons, and 5th Overall. Individually, Peterson placed 7th in the Guernsey division, 6th in Reasons, and 8th Overall, Buchanan placed 5th in the Jersey division, and Warner placed 10th in the Ayrshire division and 2nd in the Jersey division with 39 individuals and 11 teams competing.
In the Junior Dairy Management Contest, a team of youth represented Florida in the combined 4-H/FFA division. As a team, Cady McGehee, Michael Fioretto, Hunter Fioretto, and Jacob McGehee placed 2nd Overall. Cady McGehee was also named as the individual national champion in the event, a first for a youth from Florida. Michael Fioretto placed 6th Overall and Hunter Fioretto placed 10th Overall individually.
The Dairy Judging and Dairy Management contests are designed to stimulate youth learning and involvement in the dairy industry alongside dairy projects teaching evaluation, identification, reasoning, and decision making skills. Many of these youth will also go on to compete at the World Dairy Expo in Wisconsin, also this fall.
