On October 18th, the American Meat Science Association in conjunction with the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City held the National 4-H Meat Judging Contest. The Florida 4-H Youth Development Program was represented by the Marion County (FL) 4-H team who were your 2016 reserve state champions, replacing Suwannee County 4-H as your state champions at the national contest.
Team members included Tim Caswell, Patrick Sharp, Derek Sharp, and Trenell Griffin. The team placed 6th in Beef Judging, 6th in Pork Judging, 8th in Retail Judging, 9th in Retail ID, 5th in Overall Placings, 8th in Reasons, and 9th Place Overall. Individually, Derek Sharp placed 8th in Pork Judging and 3rd in Retail Judging, and Patrick Sharp placed 5th in Overall Placings. The highest scoring individual on the team was Tim Caswell, placing 16th Overall individually with 52 individuals and 14 teams competing.
Congratulations to this outstanding team on their accomplishments and all they continue to accomplish as youth within agriculture. Meat Judging is an event designed to test evaluation and selection skills of beef, pork, and lamb wholesale cuts and carcasses, along with retail meat identification for youth and defense of placings via written reasons. Livestock Judging season is here yet again, and it is hard for any other contest to capture the attention that Livestock Judging gets here in Florida! Several students from the University of Florida have taken their loves of the event on to the collegiate level and now compete in the collegiate team representing UF at competitions around the nation.
University of Florida Competes at Tulsa State Fair Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest
On October 8th, the Tulsa State Fair in Tulsa, Oklahoma, all the way in the Great Plains, held its annual Collegiate Livestock Judging Contest with junior college novice, junior college pro, and senior college divisions. Florida was represented by the UF Animal Sciences University of Florida - Livestock Judging Team with one team and two individuals competing.
Team members included Clay Whitehead, Lizzie King, Caroline Nichols, Sara Knollinger, and Allyson Trimble on the team and Cassie Nathe and Rebekka Brown competing as individuals. The team placed 18th Overall, and Whitehead was the highest scoring individual for UF, placing 65th Overall individually with 21 full teams and 132 individuals competing.
Livestock judging is an event that tests the evaluation and decision making skills of individuals to evaluate breeding and market cattle, swine, sheep, and goats as well as the defense of placings via oral reasons. For full results, visit https://www.judgingcard.com/Results/Events.aspx?ID=7354.
It might be midterm time for many college students, but that is not stopping some meat-minded students from the University of Florida from putting their skills to the test in Meat Judging!
University of Florida Meat Judging Team Competes in AMSA Eastern National Collegiate Meat Judging Contest
On September 30th and October 1st, the American Meat Science Association held its annual Eastern National Collegiate Meat Judging Contest in Wyalusing, Pa. Florida was represented by the UF Animal Sciences Department and UF Meat Sciencewith teams in the regular contest and alternate divisions.
Team members included Taylor Langford, Kelley Rendon, Marlee Kelly, and Nicole Patten in the regular division. The team placed 9th in Beef Grading, 8th in Lamb Judging, 10th in Pork Judging, 7th in Reasons and Questions, and 11th Overall. Patten placed 7th in Lamb Judging individually with 14 teams and 55 individuals competing. In the alternate contest, team members included Kaicie Chasteen, Jerri Rowell, Haley Webb, and Sarah Chambers. Webb placed 8th individually in Placings among 46 contestants.
