University of Florida Teams Compete in Houston Livestock SHow and Rodeo Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest
On Saturday, March 11th, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in Houston, Texas hosted its annual Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest, open to teams from junior colleges and universities across the country. Florida was represented by UF Meat Science from the UF College of Agricultural and Life Sciences with two teams and 13 individuals in the B Division.
The "Orange" team for UF included Sofia Calderon, Laura Garrido, William Donaghy and Jessica Brown, while the "Blue" team for UF consisted of Cassidy Dossin, Kylie Phillips, Justine Yder and Chalise Brown. The Blue team placed 8th and the Orange team placed 10th overall. Calderon placed 10th as an individual for Pork Judging and was the highest scoring individual for the Orange team, while Dossin was the highest scoring individual on the Blue team.
Kaitlyn Staszewski, Ashley Langman, Brittany Skaggs, Jacqueline Stone, Lucy Zhou, Megan Leitner, Sydney Goodwin, Liza Godfrey, Huridise Torrealba, Alexandra Emelianchik, Kassidy McGraw, Lindsey Skaggs and Elisha Marquart competed as individuals representing UF, with 10 teams and 70 individuals competing.
Next up for the UF Meat Judging Team is the Southeastern Intercollegiate Meats Judging Contest from April 7th-8th in Columbus, Ohio and Lexington, Ky.
Meat judging is an event designed to test the evaluation skills of beef, pork and lamb wholesale cuts and carcasses, along with beef grading, defect identification through specifications and defense of decisions via written reasons on the collegiate level.
